Truck accident attorney Michael Leizerman describes the best approach for choosing a truck accident attorney, providing a checklist of questions to ask of a prospective lawyer.

Most importantly, you have to trust your attorney. When a person and their family is going through what can be one of the most devastating times, you've got the right to be absolutely confident that your attorney is competent, knowledgeable and is working for you. Here are some questions to ask an attorney. Of course, I can answer all of them yes or I wouldn't be listing them, but I still think they're a fair gage of an attorney's experience: Have you handled other truck accident cases? Have you taken truck accident cases to trial before? Have you tried the case all the way up to a verdict in front of a jury? Have you taken a case to trial in which you've asked for punitive damages (In states that permit this)? Have you published articles in the area of truck accident litigation? Have you published books about truck accident litigation? Have you been involved in national trucking law organizations like AAJ's Interstate Trucking Litigation Group and AITLAmerica? Don't be shy about asking questions. Also, please remember that a lawyer's past victories are no guarantee of success in your case. Each case is different. I could brag about multimillion dollar settlements, huge verdicts, punitive damages awards, but it really doesn't make a difference. What makes a difference is that your attorney understands the intricacies of truck accident litigation and has the trial skills to take your case all the way. If you need an attorney, or if you're another attorney looking for co-counsel or a referral arrangement, I'd love to talk to you more. There are a lot of good attorneys out there. I work with attorneys who I think are the best in most of the states. You may wonder why not just hire the attorney in your state directly. You can do that. But I offer a few extras. First, I can figure out what attorneys in what states to get involved. So often I receive a phone call about a Florida driver hit by a Wisconsin truck with a Texas driver, driving a California trailer, and the accident happens in Iowa. Where do you look for an attorney? I can help you figure that out. I understand trucking cases. When I associate with an attorney in your state who I've researched and believe is top-notch, then you get both our firms for the same attorney fee, in states where this is permitted. I can coordinate the specifics of drafting a complaint, deposing the safety director, and otherwise looking at trucking specifics. The local lawyer will be familiar with the peculiarities of your state and local custom and practice of judges and other attorneys, which can differ greatly whether you're in the country, in the city, or many other factors. Please be aware that I will not take a case in any state where the ethics rules don't permit my involvement based on co-counsel rules, the content of this website, or In any situation that is ethically impermissible. Good luck to you.
