Virginia is known as “The Mother of Presidents” for good reason: The Old Dominion has contributed George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, Zachary Taylor, and Woodrow Wilson. Virginians hoping to follow in the footsteps of these men will be happy to learn that Virginia’s Statutory Code of 1930 prohibits corrupt practices or bribery by any person except a political candidate.
Virginia has the nation’s third largest state highway system and nearly 85% of the 68,429 miles in the system are owned and operated by the state government rather than by local city or county authority. Virginians also enjoy the convenience of Amtrak passenger rail service in several population centers as well as Virginia Railway Express to and from Washington, D.C. In 2006 Forbes Magazine named Virginia the best state in the country for business and Virginia’s economy is powered by a diverse slate of industries. Virginia has the highest concentration of technology workers in America working in fields such as computer chip production, communication technology, and software technology.
