Once part of what was known as the Great American Desert, Nebraska would seem an unlikely candidate for the birthplace of Arbor Day, but the holiday was first celebrated there on April 10, 1874. The holiday was the brainchild of J. Sterling Morton, a homesteader from Detroit who came to the Nebraska Territory in 1854. Morton and his wife longed for the beauty and cooling comfort of the trees they’d left behind in Michigan, and they proceeded to plant trees, shrubs and flowers throughout their homestead. The editor of Nebraska’s first newspaper, Morton spread the word on the advantages of planting trees – they serve as effective wind breaks on the plains – and the rest is Nebraska history.

Unsurprisingly, the Cornhusker State is a major producer of agricultural products including, yes, corn, as well as beef, pork, and soybeans. The manufacturing, telecommunications, IT and insurance industries also contribute significantly to the state’s $68 billion economy. The richest person in the world, Warren Buffett makes his home in Omaha, which is also the site of the world headquarters of several major corporations in dozens of industries

Roads

Interstate 75:  Entering Nebraska from south of Dawson, I-75 largely parallels the Missouri River on its north-south route.

Interstate 76:  One of two highways named Interstate 76 in America, this, the western one, runs from near Denver to the city of Big Springs Nebraska.

Interstate 80:  With more than fifty exits along I-80, Nebraska relies heavily upon this major east-west highway for its commerce. I-80 spans the state from Omaha to the Wyoming border passing through the cities of Lincoln, Big Springs, and Kimball along its way.
