No one will ever know which of the Dakotas was admitted first into the Union. North and South Dakota were such fierce rivals for recognition and statehood that when President Benjamin Harrison signed the proclamations that formally admitted them into the Union on November 2, 1889, he had the proclamation papers shuffled and obscured from him so that he wouldn’t know which he was signing first. Alphabetical order dictated that North Dakota be designated the 39th state while South Dakota was relegated to 40th.
The largest industry in North Dakota is agriculture, though petroleum and food processing contribute significantly to the state’s $24 billion economy. The Peace Garden State is the only one in America with a state owned flour mill. While 93% of North Dakota’s electricity is currently generated by coal, the state is known as the “Saudi Arabia” of wind power and that energy resource contributes increasingly to the state’s energy needs and figures prominently in plans to decrease America’s dependence on foreign oil.
