Orville and Wilbur Wright weren’t from North Carolina. These brilliant high school dropouts, bicycle shop owners, and inventers who put Kitty Hawk on the map, were from Ohio. It was Wilbur who chose Kitty Hawk as the location for the brothers’ first attempt at flight noting its steady breezes, soft sand for landing, pleasant and predictable weather, and the privacy it would afford them from intrusive reporters. After several unsuccessful attempts over a period of years and several trips between Ohio and North Carolina, Orville and Wilbur achieved the success on December 14, 1903 that lends North Carolina its motto, “First in Flight.”

While some of North Carolina’s $375 billion annual gross state product is generated by agricultural output including poultry and eggs, tobacco, hogs, milk, and soybeans, increasingly the state relies on the rapidly growing banking and finance industries in its largest city, Charlotte. The information and biotechnology industries are also expanding promisingly in the state, fueled to a large degree by collaborative projects between industry and North Carolina’s many excellent institutions of higher learning such as Duke University and the various campuses of the University of North Carolina. Increasingly, North Carolina is home to television and film production due to the beauty of its environs and the quality of its year-round climate.

Roads

Interstate 26:  I-26 is a major route in America’s Interstate Highway system running from Tennessee to South Carolina. The portion of I-26 that runs from Mars Hill, North Carolina east to I-240 in Asheville, North Carolina carries signage reading FUTURE I-26 because it does not yet meet all of the standards of the U.S. Interstate Highway system.

Interstate 40:  Running 421 miles through North Carolina from the Tennessee border to Wilmington, North Carolina, I-40 contains the stretch of highway known popularly as “Tobacco Road” because it links the Universities whose sports teams comprise the Tobacco Road rivalry.

Interstate 77:  Beginning at the South Carolina state line, I-77 passes through or near the cities of Charlotte, Lake Norman, and Statesville.

Interstate 85:  The second-longest Interstate in North Carolina behind only I-40, I-85 spans 233 miles of the state from the South Carolina border to the border of Virginia and ultimately links the major cities of Atlanta, Charlotte, Greensboro, Richmond, and Washington, D.C.
