Maine is aptly called the Pine Tree State as ninety percent of its land is home to coniferous forests. Our country’s easternmost state, Maine has the distinction of being the only state that borders only one other – New Hampshire to the west. Maine’s stark natural beauty consisting of verdant mountains, rocky coastal cliffs, and plentiful lakes has inspired poets, scientists and naturalists, yet its appeal hasn’t led to overpopulation: there are only 41.3 Mainers per square mile ranking it 38th in population density in the U.S. In its northern unorganized territory lies an area of 2,668 square miles with 27 total inhabitants, or one person per 100 square miles.
Its overall population of 1,321,504 is principally distributed among its largest cities: Auburn, Bangor, Biddeford, Brunswick, Lewiston, Portland, Sanford, Scarborough, South Portland and Augusta, the state capital. Connected to Boston by Amtrak’s Downeaster passenger train, Maine is also home to two U.S. Routes, 6 & 9, which are often used by truckers as short cuts to Central Canada. The state’s economy relies heavily on the influx of tourists during warm months and on the prodigious blueberry crop – Maine produces 25% of all blueberries in North America. Other vital components of Maine’s economy include paper, lumber and wood products, electronic equipment, naval shipbuilding and construction, and commercial fishing, particularly lobstering and groundfishing.
