Some drivers with diabetes mellitus -- a condition that prohibits driving a commercial vehicle under the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations-- can now obtain an exemption under a new program announced by the FMCSA. The applicant for exemption must 1)have 3 years safe driving while using insulin; 2)meet guidelines for managing diabetes; and 3) meet guidelines for monitoring their diabetes. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration will begin taking exemption applications on September 22, 2003.

The FMCSA announced this program after studying the dffects of insulin-treated diabetes on driver performance, reviewing USDOT and state exemption programs and obtaining input from endocrinologists.

The FMCSA will monitor this program and may issue future modifications.
